Article Writing for Procrastinators: A Brain Gym® Strategy
by MaryJo Wagner, Ph.D.

So you know you want to write articles on a regular basis. Some internet marketers push writing an article a day. And they’ve told us that article marketing is one of the best ways to drive traffic to your site. You’ve got lots of good content in your head. You really know your stuff.

Now you sit down to write and a big nothing happens. You’re stuck. All of a sudden the only idea you have is to find a cookie to eat while waiting for the coffee to brew.  And when all else fails check your email, post on FaceBook, hang out on Twitter.

It’s called procrastination and we’ve all done it!  Now there’s a quick, if odd, solution for you.

If you’re a runner, you do it every day. If you’re not a runner, you’ve seen runners and other athletes do it. It’s called the “Runner’s Stretch.” Brain Gym folks call it “Calf Pump.’  For runners, it stretches out tight muscles and tendons in the calves.

For article writers, it helps us move forward, stop procrastinating, and get on with finishing that article—or just starting it.  Sounds weird, I know, but it’s true.

Physical movement changes the neural pathways in the brain. And this particular movement seems to help get those neurons firing in the frontal lobes—where you express yourself in writing—and fewer neurons firing in the back of brain where you get stuck.

Not sure how to do it?  Here’s how. Stand up. Now lean forward with your hands placed against a wall or the back of your chair. Bend one knee, making sure your knee isn’t beyond your toes. Stretch the other leg behind you as far as you can. Not so far that it hurts but far enough that you feel a stretch.

Now slowly lift the heel of your outstretched leg up off the floor and lower you heel back down. Be sure to breath—inhale as you lift your heel, exhale as you lower your heel. Repeat slowly at least six times.

Switch. Opposite leg is stretched out and the other leg is in the bent knee position.

It’s easy. It’s relaxing. And usually helps with procrastination.

In general any kind of movement helps with writing, working at your computer, and learning complicated new software. So give your brain a break. Get up every 30-40 minutes.

Do a Runner’s Stretch, walk about your house if you’re in a home office. Go up and down stairs. Even toe touches with your ankles crossed helps. You can do toe touches sitting down or standing up.

Since this is a brain break and you want to get back to work right away, you probably don’t want to do your aerobic workout right now.

P.S. Ladies, if you’re wearing high heels everyday, please do this Runner’s Stretch (aka Calf Pump). High heels shorten the tendons in your calf. Get those tendons back to the normal length with Calf Pump.
